ASUS And PrimeSense Presents The WAVI Xtion The 3D Gesture Controlled User Interface For Computer

ASUS has announced a new entertainment peripheral, the ASUS WAVI Xtion, which promises gesture-based control for PCs in the living room. The new box uses PrimeSense Immersive Natural Interaction technology and hook up via UWB to connect your TV to your computer.
Prime Sense, lest you’ve forgotten, are the motion-perception brains behind Microsoft’s Kinect for the Xbox 360.
Prime Sense is the company developing the hardware powering Kinnect, its Immersive Natural Interaction solutions, will be embedded in WAVI Xtion, a user interface developed by ASUS. WAVI Xtion is media center
software for the PC that allows users to interact with media content in the living room without the need of a controller. Using natural gestures, people can browse the internet, access media content and eventually play games, when developers will get their hands on Xtion PRO, the world’s first PC-exclusive 3D sensing professional development solution.
The WAVI Xtion (read: way-vee action), debutant newer so-called ASUS capable of displaying high definition media wirelessly from a PC located in a single room to a TV in another room. WAVI Xtion consists of two components, namely the wireless streaming media device and a motion sensor Xtion WAVI.

As a motion sensor, WAVI Xtion PrimeSense integrates technology from the user interface with exclusive ASUS Xtion Portal. Meanwhile, for PC connection and a TV, ASUS uses a wireless HDMI (WHDMI technology) that provides a smooth transfer of data to display high definition content such as movies, games, and photos at a frequency of 5 GHz with coverage reaching 25 meters.

As ASUS see it, users will hook up their TV, set-top box and PC, and use WAVI Xtion to control them with easy gestures rather than complex keyboards and remotes. That includes internet browsing, multimedia
gallery navigation and social networking. Range is around 25 feet.
WAVI Xtion will be paired with Xtion PRO, a development package for coders wanting to take advantage of the hardware in their own apps, available in February 2011.
WAVI Xtion integrates motion-sensing technology from PrimeSense with the exclusive ASUS Xtion Portal user interface to bring consumers closer to technology through intuitive interaction with applications.
Connections to both PCs and TVs via wireless HDMI (WHDI technology) deliver smooth transfers of high definition content such as movies, games and photos in 5GHz with a range of up to 25 meters.
Software products available on launch include MayaFit Cardio Lite, a motion-sensing fitness training game and BeatBooster, a multiplayer racing adventure game where users maneuver jet aircraft with their body movements. Enjoying PC games on the living room big screen TV is possible; the proprietary Xtion engine supports the remapping of keyboard controls into motion gestures for a variety of popular third party games.
Speaking on cooperation with ASUS when developing WAVI Xtion motion-sensing technology, PrimeSense CEO Inon Beracha said, “Our collaboration with ASUS in providing a 3D sensing solution for WAVI Xtion proves to the industry that natural interaction technology is the ideal fit for living rooms, and that intuitive, gesture-based control will be the go-to route for operating all devices. We believe that PrimeSense solutions like the user interface used on ASUS’ WAVI Xtion represent the future of the way people interact with consumer electronics, and help break down barriers use to allow people to sync with the electronic world around them.”
WAVI Xtion enables a wide selection of multimedia content and entertainment applications, working seamlessly with the ASUS at vibe online store to deliver music, games and apps, all through the cloud.
Developers interested in creating gesture-based PC entertainment content can make use of the ASUS Xtion PRO developer pack, the world’s first professional PC motion-sensing toolset. It opens up new opportunities for cost and time-efficient development of various applications, including games of every genre. ASUS plans to launch the Xtion Pro Developer Challenge in March, with attractive prizes and publishing deals for winning developers. Selected apps will be placed on the ASUS at vibe online store.
