The Case :

Except of the display lid and the palm rests, the reviewed Dell Inspiron 13z uses matte, slightly roughened surfaces. Already at first glance it looks robust. While the palm rests and the touch pad have a silver, easy to clean, finish, fingerprints quickly and visibly collect on the obsidian black, textured, high-gloss lid. Because of the texture at least small scratches and dust are not that eye-catching. Overall the appearance reminds on years gone by, when notebooks were usually black and silver.
Although keyboard, palm rests, and touchpad have quite different surfaces, these feel all nice to the touch and are very functional.
These also profit from the robust plastics already mentioned above and allow hardly any twisting. The areas of the speakers above the keyboard, the palm rests, and the bottom are very stable too, and cannot be crimped. Also the stability of the keyboard is good, yet not ideal, because it gives already upon medium pressure. The hinges are able to absorb slight vibrations. However, they cannot cope well with a heavier tremble, as e.g. during a train ride, and the display starts to seesaw. In such a situation you can observe that also the hinges, which are apparently too small.
The stability of the lid meets its protective function. So, restrictions are not to be expected in practice. Altough the frame is not absolutely flexural rigid, we could not provoke distortions at the powered screen. If the notebook is closed, small foam nubs keep display and keyboard in an appropriate distance and prevent marks on the screen.

Design :
The design of this notebook is very gorgeous and the looks are glossy.
The incline of the cover is analogous to the rapid car’s slit drop look. The pivots of screen are round in design and made up of plastic material which is black in color with metal core as a substitute for metal brushed outer. The design of the wedge angles is similar to the Inspiron 13. The design of the notebook when opened is of black plastic type. There are touch sensitive keys on the crown edge of the keyboard but these keys don’t glow up when hit. The keyboard of this laptop is black in color with black textured plastic wrist rest which is very much nice and appealing. The wrist rest is made up of same black textured plastic which looks a bit odd and cheap. The armature of the system is quite solid because of the support of the metal which is present at right positions. There is no bend on the foot or anywhere on the notebook. Rear part of LCD has
some bend which produces undulations on the monitor if it’s hard-pressed. The pivots are soft and rigid which helps in giving the notebook a good experience and gaze. Thus, the quality of build is robust.
The screen of this notebook is rated to be average. The viewing angles are poor but the brightness of the screen in office or home is grand but not the same when taken out for sun. The glossy pane on the screen
glares when the light falls on it. Direct viewing is ok when compared to the off-straight viewing which washes out the screen and loses the contrast. This happens when the screen is viewed from top and when it is viewed from bottom, the colors invert and when viewed from the extreme angles, the whole section looks black.

The speakers are present atop the keyboard area and they are loud enough whenever it’s required. The sound from the speakers is bit clanging. The volume output can be restricted with the help of touch
sensitive keys which are present at the right top side of the keyboard and are tough to use but are pleasant to look. The headphones also sound good over the speakers. The keyboard of this notebook is almost
businesslike and is good too. The keys on the keyboard have matte finish and are black in color.

The feel of typing is tremendous with the soft keys and these are hardly perceptible when they are pressed. The region of the keyboard is somewhat confined than usual. The touch pad offered with this laptop works well and is petite when compared to the usual size. The buttons of mouse are well with profound, finicky press and hushed snaps. The touch pad is responsive and has devoted spool spot and the textured feel is of high-quality.

Features:

There are only a few USB ports speckled roughly round the boundary and in open space. Only 2 USB ports are offered with this laptop. VGA out, ExpressCard/54, FireWire, 10/100LAN, Mic / Headphone, multi card reader are the other offered features with this laptop. Heat exhaust, battery and hinges are found to be positioned at the rear side of the notebook whereas microphone jack, headphone jack and multi card reader are placed in the front. VGA out, power jack, FireWire, USB port, Ethernet and hard drive access panel are located to the left side and Wi-Fi off/on, USB port, ExpressCard slot, security lock slot and loading optical drive slot are all present to the right of the notebook.

Performance:

The performance of this notebook is astonishingly healthy. The videos when played are a bit slow due to the type of processor used. As this notebook is mainly student oriented, the power offered by notebook is more than enough even while handling from MS Word to iTunes. Heat flow from the system is greatly managed in this notebook and the noise output is also less when compared to other notebooks of same range.
The wrist rest heats up on usage but the temperature remains less and is usable. The noise of hard drive is minimized and no scratching noises are heard while using. A 6 cell battery is used in this notebook and the life is rated to be 4hrs and 9mins. If a DVD is watched then the life of battery reduces to 3hrs. Battery should have been of much power for this notebook is mostly concentrated on students.

Outline:

This notebook has evenhanded specs with thin design and also the price of notebook is very eye-catching. Albeit of raucous slot packing drive and despicable wrist rest this notebook is better.
The usual standard interfaces for connecting peripherals are available. With three times USB 2.0, ethernet, analog VGA-out, audio in/out (combined), card reader (7-in-1), and Kensington securiy slot it is ready for most fields of application. A further pro is the HDMI port, which allows a digital connection of flat screen TVs and displays (in case the screen has a display port or DVI port an adapter is needed). In addition HDMI also allows to transmit audio data (HDMI to HDMI), which reduces the number of cables. This Inspiron laptop
has an optical drive built-in, which is not commonplace in slim subnotebooks. This simplifies installation of software and backup of data.

System Noise :

Despite relatively powerful components inside a small case, the system noise is overall agreeably low. Not only is the noise characteristic more or less steady, but also the measurements prove a low noise level. Idling we recorded 31.4 dB(A). So, the Dell Inspiron is only audible in very quiet environments. Depending on the energy profile the noise level can raise up to 34 dB(A) at low load, and the sonorous noise is hardly obtrusive.
During use of the DVD drive the noise level reaches 36.3 dB(A). So, the DVD drive’s noise can especially be heard during quiet scenes of a movie. As an alternative you could play the movie files from hard disk. 39 dB(A) under full load are no fun any more and will likely annoy the user after a short period of time.

Temperature :

Obviously, the system noise is low at the expense of higher case temperatures. When working at high CPU and GPU load you might feel inconvenient, because of maximum temperatures of 46.2 degrees Celsius at the touchpad area and of 46.6 to 50.6 degrees celsius at its counterpart at the bottom side. Without load and with maximum energy saving the maximum temperature of 34.3 degrees Celsius is clearly lower and unremarkable. Therefore, browsing the Internet with the notebook on your lap should not be a problem.

Battery Life :
The excellent battery life of the Dell Inspiron 13z results on the one hand from the frugal components and on the other hand from a capacious 80 Wh battery. The minimal wattage of 9.4 Watt reflects the energy
saving which follows from consequent usage of low-energy components. The Intel S7300, the LED-display, and the Nvidia graphic card, which has only low energy demands under low load, cooperate in the aspect.

Overall, the Inspiron 13z has great potential, because its pros allow a wide field of application. It qualifies for mobile use especially with its long battery life, its low weight, and its good case quality.
Unfortunately the main user interface, the display, is a disadvantage here. Its heavily reflecting surface is very restricting indoors as well as outdoors. While it is possible to minimize this effect inside buildings by some arrangements, outdoor operation is hardly possible, because the background lighting is not strong enough to illuminate the reflections. The luscious colors and the good illumination are only cold comfort. In the other hand must appreciated the good system performance, which does not only cope well with basic tasks, but also include a limited gaming capability, and clearly faster performance in special tasks like video decoding by Nvidia’s CUDA engine. Those who love movies will also value the smooth replay of full HD videos and the HDMI interface.
