Samsung Develops The New Hummingbird Processor Chip For Being The Fastest Smartphone Processor In 2013

Samsung and Intrinsity have worked together to prepare for the fastest processor aimed at devices such as Apple’s iPhone. Processor chip developed by Samsung and Instrinsity based in Austin, Texas the same as the processor of the iPhone 3G, the ARM Cortex A8 processor 600MHz.
Licensing company ARM to design energy-efficient chips are now starting to be used by chip suppliers, including Samsung, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, and Nvidia. Intrinsity’s Cortex-A8 processor-based Fastcore embedded core is cycle-accurate and Boolean equivalent to the original Cortex-A8 RTL specification. While most ARM processor cores are implemented with synthesized static logic and
compiled SRAMs, the Hummingbird achieves the exceptional 1GHz clock rate in Samsung’s 45nm LP process technology through the use of a semi-custom design flow which strategically applies Intrinsity’s proprietary Fast14 one-of-N domino logic (NDL) technology as macros in the timing-critical paths of the Cortex-A8 RTL core. NDL provides low latency conversion between domino logic and static logic which allows NDL to be seamlessly applied to a standard cell synthesized design.

NDL provides gates which are 25 to 50 percent faster than static logic gates.
Not only is the new processor amazingly powerful (almost twice as fast as the iPhone 3GS unit), but it is extremely energy efficient too. The Hummingbird can run at a high speed even at the minimum supply voltage
of 1.0V, which makes it really suitable for use in mobile devices. The companies standing behind the ARM Cortex family development expect it to account for about half of the total market for mobile application
processors by 2013. Quite a bold forecast but it might just as well come true, with ARM already having more than a dozen Cortex-A processor family licensees.
Samsung’s fastest processor chip creation and Intrinsity was named Hummingbird, which can then be applied on the iPhone or similar device. “Samsung created a Hummingbird into S5PC100 design without any changes. Previously, the design S5PC100 already in the iPhone 3G, and for the next edition of the iPhone will have a clock speed up to 1GHz.
“Said Tom R. Halfhill, senior analyst at Microprocessor Report. Halfhill added that Samsung will use the Hummingbird for the future of smartphones, especially for Apple’s upcoming device. One advantage of the
Hummingbird chip is related to clock speed, something that is not supported on ARM designs, where the ARM chip talk about power efficiency, not high performance. “But now we have changed, Design-core mobile processor is more focused on high performance clock speed, and at the same energy efficiency.” Commentator Jae Cheol Son, vice president of SOC Development Platform, from Samsung Electronics.

In this Hummingbird chip, to get a 1GHz clock speed 45nm manufacturing process is required, smaller than the current chips that use 65nm process. The smaller, faster and more efficient energy use. To achieve a 1GHz operating clock speed in 45nm LP process, the Hummingbird utilizes a semi-custom design flow which involves custom designed circuit/memory structures, a set of customized primitive cells, and the enhanced RTL FastCore and Fast14 high-speed domino logic from Intrinsity in its implementation. A multi-Vdd / multi-frequency design methodology was also used to ensure the Hummingbird can run at a high speed even at the minimum supply voltage of 1.0V. The low power consumption and the high operating clock performance make the Hummingbird an ideal processor core for use in advanced mobile devices. Hummingbird chip concept is possible to be used in mobile application processor or main processor in the smartphone starting 2013.
