Secure Your iPad From Password Crackers with Haroon Meer’s ShoulderPad Application

No doubt that such gadget like iPad tablet provides a new sensation in computing activities better than just typing, playing, to surf the Internet. Whatever is done on a laptop or desktop computer can be represented by this one mini device.

Despite offers flexibility in computing, its users deserve to be aware of password theft by using these tools. Hacking activity may be performed using iPad 2 that has been equipped with a camera. When typing in your sensitive information into a website, you know that pretty much every site always mask passwords. One reason for this is to stop people from snooping over your shoulder and stealing your logins. However, a security researcher has figured out a way of seeing past password masks.

Haroon Meer, a South African security researcher that made a special application called shoulderPad that utilizes a camera in the iPad 2 to see the password typed in an iPhone or iPad. The way it works is when someone starts typing a password with the virtual keyboard is in its iPad or iPhone, you can point a camera at the iPad and anything typed on the iPad will be recorded in this application. This may occur because once a person typing with the virtual keyboard, the keys will light touch for a few moments and the keys are lit that recorded by
shoulderPad which has an algorithm to find out what keys have been selected. This proves that despite the keywords you’ve entered is masked by an asterisk symbol (*), it can’t be a guarantee that the passwords of the accounts you have is safe. Haroon Meer’s application
doesn’t disseminate to the public because it realizes that such applications are more vulnerable to abuse. Despite being a threat for users of IOS, something like this could also target other platforms such as Android and BlackBerry also because it has the same concept of
a virtual keyboard. It is appropriate that the tablet PC users started to look around before surfing in cyberspace for the password of the accounts of those securities are not changed hands in the presence of such applications.
Meer’s shoulderPad app analyzes the light given off when a person enters a passcode on the iPad’s touchscreen. From there, shoulderApp, using the built in camera on the snooper’s device, runs the keystrokes through an image recognition algorithm that reads and interprets them to detect exactly what the victim entered. Meer also said the same technology, a combination of traditional spying and futuristic keystroke detection, could also be applied to footage from surveillance cameras.
Thankfully, Haroon is not offering the app to the public, seeing the damage that such technology could cause in the wrong hands. However, it is an eye opener in case you were ever wondering just how safe your information is as you type it out. For those thinking it may be time to get rid of your iOS devices, it’s not just an potential flaw with Apple touchscreen products–researchers at an Italian company have also discovered a similar over-shoulder trick, which can pick up keyboards on Android and Blackberry smartphones too.
