Do you often get frustrated while you wait around for your slow Windows XP computer to startup? Windows XP will automatically load and startup all the programs that are in the startup folder whether you intend to use them or not.
There are many reasons why Windows is slow when starting up and here we will look at some of the common ones and the possible solutions on how to speed up Windows XP start up. When we look at how to speed up
Windows XP start up, we need to first know what happen when Windows starts. Basically, the system reads the hard disk and Windows registry and loads whatever programs that are loaded onto Windows. Some
programs are started the moment Windows starts and continue to run throughout the session while others are started but remain idle until an operation is necessary. Windows also reads the system settings from
the registry and sets up the environment when user logs in. Here’s some useful tips to speedup the startup process :
• Empty the Startup folder
Click Start, All Programs, Startup. Click and drag the programs that are not always needed during startup to, for example, the desktop.

• Diactivate start-up programs
To disable programs which are not needed during startup is to click Start, Run, then type msconfig and click OK. See a list of existing programs and remove the check for programs you do not need.
• Select the font as needed
Many programs which mengistal fonts into your computer, which certainly add to the time required for Windows to start-ups. To remove unnecessary fonts, go to Control Panel, change the view to Classic
View and double-click Fonts. Then double-click to view it, if not required to move to another folder aja yg can later return it if you want it back.
• Discard the old drivers that are not used anymore
If you remove the hardware from the system then you also remove the emotion associated driver software. Use the Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel to remove the software and associated drivers that are
not needed anymore.
• Stop unneeded services
Service is a program running in the background on your computer system. Not all services needed, and can be disabled. Click Start, Run and type services.msc and click OK to see all services that are running. Select an existing service and description will appear in what is left of its function. Double click the service and set of ‘service type’ to disable it. But be careful you can only do that if you believe it’s not going to make your windows a mess, examples of service who do not need is the Uninterruptible Power Supply, Messenger, Alerter, Clipbook, Remote Registry, Network DDE and Machine Debug Manager.
• Disable ‘File and printer sharing
If no network in your home, then do not need to share files and printers, so you can disable this option to make kenceng at start-up your computer. It’s easy really. Go to Control Panel, double-click Network Connections. Right-click each icon and select Properties.
Uncheck “File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks”.
• Defrag your hard disk regularly
The files used to run Windows in a long time will be scattered on your hard disk, which can make the slow process of start-ups.
Defragmentation can tidy up those files for faster access. To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmeter.
• Set the boot-up sequence
Computers can start reading the system from the hard disk or floppy disk, CD or DVD-ROM drive, USB flash or external hard disk. Make sure the hard disk is the first time they are accessed Windows. Use the BIOS Setup Utility on your computer. Look for boot-up sequence, make sure your hard disk in the first place.
• Empty CD / DVD drives
When your computer starts to booting-up, the computer will check the CD / DVD drive is no disk in it, maybe you hear the sound drive that spins. Take the disk in the CD / DVD drive before turning off the computer and when the next time you restart the computer does not have to bother wasting time checking the contents of the CD / DVD drives.
• Clean the Prefetch folder
Windows stores recently accessed coffee program in the folder Windows / Prefetch in order to expedite the search process on the hard disk.
But some PC experts claim that it is better to clean Prefetch folder regularly to keep loading programs Use the minimum when you return your computer. Although some are not agreed.
• Disable Indexing Services
Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists.
If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:
1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next
8. Finish
• Optimise Display Settings
Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimize:
1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
8. Show shadows under menus
9. Show shadows under mouse pointer
10. Show translucent selection rectangle
11. Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
12. Use visual styles on windows and buttons
• Speedup Folder Browsing
You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:
1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer
9. Done
